Living in Ahuntsic-Cartierville

Ahuntsic-Cartierville occupies the top edge of the island of Montréal, bounded by the rivière des Prairies to the north and cut through by Autoroute 15. It is one of the quieter parts of the city that is still genuinely in the city - residential streets and mature trees, but with a hospital, a CEGEP, a station and a major shopping strip all inside a ten-minute radius.

For anyone deciding whether to rent here, that combination is the whole argument. You get a borough that feels settled and low-key, without giving up the things that make living in Montréal convenient.

Getting around

Bois-de-Boulogne station is about five minutes away, which is the single most useful fact about the location if you commute. The orange line runs through the borough as well, putting downtown within a straightforward ride.

If you drive, Autoroute 15 is the main artery - north toward Laval and the Laurentians, south toward downtown and the Décarie. Getting off the island toward Laval is a short hop across the river rather than a cross-town slog, which is why this part of Montréal suits people who work on both sides of the water.

Worth knowing Rush hour on Autoroute 15 southbound is genuinely slow. If your commute is downtown and you have the choice, the train is usually the faster option.

Groceries, errands and everything else

Marché Central and Costco are both roughly ten minutes away, which covers the big monthly shop and anything involving a car boot. Place Rockland is a similar distance for actual shopping rather than provisioning.

Day to day, the borough is well served by smaller shops and neighbourhood restaurants - the sort of places that don't make it into guidebooks but that you end up using twice a week.

The river, and green space

The northern edge of the borough runs along the rivière des Prairies, and the riverside parks there are the reason a lot of people stay in Ahuntsic longer than they planned. It is a real amenity rather than a token strip of grass - usable for running, cycling and sitting still in summer.

Who tends to live here

The mix is broad. Collège Bois-de-Boulogne is about five minutes away, so there is a steady student population. Hôpital du Sacré-Cœur is about seven minutes away, which brings hospital staff who want a short commute. Around them sit a lot of long-settled families - the kind of tenancy mix that keeps a building calm.
